Rebuilding Shahe Lianmeng Village Primary School

Shahe Lianmeng Village Primary School is located in Nanjiang County in the northeastern part of Sichuan Province. The school building was a wood and brick structure built in the early 1950’s. Due to the lack of funding for maintenance and erosion by heavy rains, the school building was terribly rundown and close to collapse when we visited it in 2004. Children attended school every day at the risk of their lives, in particular during the rainy seasons in spring and summer.

With the joint funding by Sunflower and the local government, the new school was rebuilt using concrete structure in 2005. The new school has 8 classrooms, providing a much safer and better environment for students from the surrounding villages. We are relieved to learn that the school building remains intact, and not a single child is hurt during the disastrous earthquake in Sichuan Province in 2008.

Over the years, the foundation of the building had cracked and shifted. The school also faced with dangers of landslides during the rainy seasons. Relocating and rebuilding the school was a must before any major accidents happened.

With the joint funding by Sunflower and the local government, the school was relocated to a safe new site and was rebuilt using concrete structure in 2006. The new school has 30 classrooms, housing hundreds of students from Grade 1 to Grade 6. The school building remains intact and not a single child is hurt during the disastrous earthquake in Sichuan Province in 2008.

Building Fences for Qingchang Xingou Primary School

Xingou Primary School is located in Qingchang County, close to Bijie City in the northwestern part of Guizhou Province. A river runs beside the school, and the children were in danger of falling into the water during breaks and lunch time. The school needed help to build surrounding fences to protect the students. The school also needed new desks and benches for the students as the old ones were beyond repair.

The children were in danger of falling off the slope during break and playtimes. To make matter worse, the school is far away from medical facility should any accident happen.

With the joint funding by Sunflower and the local government, a 100 meters concrete fence was built around the school to protect the children in 2013. The students are now studying in a much safer environment.

Donating Bijie Chudu Primary School Library

Chudu Primary school is located in Qingchang County, close to Bijie City, Guizhou Province. When we visited the school in 2012, we learned that the limited books in the school library were old and outdated. With help from teachers in Beijing to create a book list for primary school children, we donated 4,000 books to the school library. To help the teachers to administer the library, we provided them with a laptop and a library administration software. While bringing the books to the school, we also brought the students durable schoolbags that they need.
